When to Automate vs. Manual

Don't automate everything just because you can. Some tasks are better left to humans.

Keep manual when: - The situation requires judgment (e.g., "this keyword has poor ACOS but it's supporting our brand term rank") - You're in a testing phase where you need to understand what the data is telling you before automating - The stakes of a wrong automation are high (e.g., a large budget campaign where one bad decision costs hundreds of dollars) - Your account is small (under $500/month ad spend) — automation tools often cost more than the time savings are worth

The honest calculation: If your time is worth $50/hour and automation saves you 5 hours a week, that's $250/week in value. If a tool costs $200/month, it's worth it. If it costs $500/month, the math gets tighter.


Rule-Based Automation Setup

Amazon's native rules (available in Campaign Manager under "Rules") let you automate bid and budget changes based on conditions you define. Here's how to set them up safely.

Rule Structure

Every rule has three parts: 1. Trigger — the condition that starts the action (e.g., "impressions > 1000 AND clicks > 10") 2. Action — what happens when the trigger fires (e.g., "reduce bid by 10%") 3. Constraint — limits on when the action applies (e.g., "only apply if ACOS > 35%")

Common Rule Patterns

Pattern 1: The Keyword Kill Rule

Trigger: Clicks >= 50, Conversions = 0
Action: Reduce bid to $0.02
Constraint: Campaign has been running for 30+ days
This is one of the most universally useful rules. It doesn't delete keywords — it effectively disables them at a penny bid so they stop spending while you review whether there's a legitimate reason they haven't converted. Some will have a story worth keeping; many will confirm you should negative them.

Pattern 2: The Winner Escalation Rule

Trigger: Conversions >= 5, ACOS < target ACOS
Action: Increase bid by 10%
Constraint: Bid ceiling of $3.00 (don't auto-escalate into expensive territory)
This lets winning keywords spend more when they're clearly working. The bid ceiling is non-negotiable — without it, you're letting the algorithm escalate without bounds.

Pattern 3: Budget Protector Rule

Trigger: Spend reaches 80% of daily budget
Action: Reduce bid by 15% on lowest-performing keywords
This extends your budget through the day instead of burning through it in the morning. It's not about efficiency — it's about not missing afternoon traffic.

What Not to Automate

Never automate rules that: - Change bids based on same-day data (too volatile, too many false signals) - Delete campaigns or ad groups (too hard to undo) - Set bids above a certain ceiling (automation that can escalate without bound is dangerous) - Are based on less than 14 days of data (small samples are misleading)


Automation Failure Modes

These are the patterns that catch people off guard.

Failure Mode 1: The Data Lag Problem

Most automation tools work on 24-48 hour old data. A rule that says "pause when ACOS > 50%" is working with yesterday's ACOS. If your ACOS is volatile or your daily spend is high, a 48-hour lag can mean significant wasted spend before the rule fires.

Fix: Set more conservative triggers (pause at 40% ACOS instead of 50%) when the data lag is significant. The earlier trigger catches problems faster.

Failure Mode 2: Correlation vs. Causation

A rule might trigger because of something unrelated to the keyword itself. A keyword that normally has 20% ACOS suddenly hits 50% because you added a new competitor, your main listing had a bad review, or Amazon changed a placement. The rule pauses it, you lose sales for 3 days while it sits paused, and by the time you investigate the ACOS is back to normal.

Fix: Never automate pauses. Automate bid reductions instead. A paused keyword stops all data collection. A keyword at a penny bid stops spending but keeps gathering data.

Failure Mode 3: Stale Rules

Rules you wrote 6 months ago might still be firing on campaigns that have changed significantly. A bid ceiling of $1.00 might have made sense when you started; now your campaign has proven it can profitably bid $2.50 but the rule is capping it.

Fix: Review all active rules monthly. Ask yourself: "Does this rule still make sense for where the campaign is now?"

Failure Mode 4: Multiple Rules on the Same Target

If you have a bid escalation rule and a budget protection rule both running on the same keywords, they can fight each other. One raises the bid, the other lowers it in response to the same data signal.

Fix: Know every rule that's running on every campaign. Keep rules simple and purposeful. One clear rule beats five overlapping ones.

Failure Mode 5: Automation for Novel Situations

Automation works well for patterns that repeat. It fails when something new happens — a new competitor enters the market, Amazon introduces a new ad format, your product gets caught in a category crackdown. The rules weren't written for this, so nothing triggers.

Fix: Check your account manually every week regardless of how much automation you have running. Automation handles what you expect; you need to watch for what you don't.


API and Webhook Workflows

What You Can Do With the API
